Cold season SOS kit

Bunged up to high heaven, but have to face the world? Join the club, says Tory Frost. Here are the products you'll need to help you feel – and look – human

It’s autumn. When you can binge on mash, switch to burgundy nail polish and stop bothering to shave your legs. But, lest you get too cosy, just as you’re pouring a glass of red and settling in to watch Strictly, you notice a tickle at the back of your throat, sneeze eight times and, before you know it, you have a full-blown cold.

Yes, cold season is upon us, and with it comes dull skin, a red nose, dark circles and puffy eyes. My own 2015 snot-fest came early, just days before a fancy Soho wedding. Determined not to miss an open bar and drag queen DJ, I went full beauty attack on any visible symptoms so that – in the pictures at least – you’d have no idea I had a clutch stuffed with loo roll. My victory means I’m totally qualified to give a lesson on surviving cold season, face intact. So here we go, the seven things you’ll need this autumn. Pass the anti-bac.

YOUR LIMBS ACHE WORSE THAN THAT TIME YOU TRIED CROSSFIT

If you have a big event and time for a full-scale pampering, have a nice bath. The arnica and lavender in this eases aches, while the lemon clears your head… and it doesn’t leave you smelling like Vicks.

SPORTING THE RED, FLAKY NOSE OF DOOM

Slather this under your nose every half hour/nose blow. Do NOT be tempted to pick at dry skin but, once it’s time to look presentable, gently slough away flakes with a muslin. The Lucas Paw Paw Ointment is cheaper, but 8 Hour Cream contains salicylic acid to help calm redness while exfoliating.

YOUR SKIN RESEMBLES A PIECE OF SANDPAPER

Colds strip all liquid from your body and pumps it straight out of your nose (or so it feels), leaving your face dry and dull. Go hardcore on moisture and brightness by starting your routine with this cleansing balm– it leaves skin baby-smooth, and massaging it in can help drain away puffiness in your face.

YOU HAVE THE EYES OF AN INSOMNIAC PANDA

If, like me, you have hereditary dark rings, nothing will take them away completely, but there were visible results after these. They feel wonderful straight from the fridge and the cold helps calm puffiness from congestion.

YOU’VE DEVELOPED A GREY, CORPSE-LIKE PALOUR

This new wonder oil from The Body Shop is totally non-greasy and seems to plump up skin from within. It’s formulated to repair, so soothes spots you’ve picked at, dry patches and redness. It also smells strong and fresh enough help clear your airways.

CONSTANT NOSE BLOWING HAS TURNED IT INTO AN ANGRY BEACON

You’re going to need a concealer that stays put, to deal with tissues and hot flushes – this is the best I’ve used. Adheres to the face like concrete, without cracking or settling in lines. And it’s a steal.

CRAP FLAT HAIR WITH NO TIME TO BLOW-DRY

I’m evangelical about Batiste and this is a step beyond dry shampoo. If there’s no time to wash, this revives and adds mega volume in one go. It will also turn a basic ponytail into an event-worthy voluminous up-do. I can’t be without it, cold or no cold.
