Prime Time!

I just want to talk quickly about primers today.

Do you ever use one? I think they’re fantastic, and – to be honest – the older I get, the more fantastic I think they are!

They’re great not just for the way they help whatever make-up you apply just glide on more easily and evenly, but the best also help to illuminate your skin and cover a multitude of skin woes from lack of sleep/feeling under par to generally looking-and-feeling-blah.

I used to save them for nights out, parties and special occasions but these days, I find I’m reaching for one most mornings, post-serum (right now, this old favourite) and moisturiser if I’m making time to do what’s most effective (sometimes, I’ll take a short cut and actually skip moisturiser and apply a lotion or cream-based primer right away).

It really makes a difference, giving my skin an extra, all-forgiving glow before my base (my beloved Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Fluid, which I wrote about here – still going strong from summer and I can’t bring myself to switch to anything else).

Here are three I’ve got on the go right now to report back on – I’d LOVE to hear about any of your recommendations, too!

1. Emma Hardie Protect and Prime SPF30 (£45)

Absolutely LOVE this. It’s so sheer, glides on and truly lights up the skin without being an obvious shimmer as such. So clever, great SPF and smells AMAZING.

2. Nars Light Optimizing Primer SPF15 (£25)

My teenage daughter swooped on this one and wore it this past weekend when she was a bridesmaid and needed something to help her make-up last, look natural and glowy. She LOVED it and wore it in combination with the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation (£31). Her make-up stayed flawless, non-shiny but still very natural-looking all day.

Yes, I’ll be pinching it – I know it’s a much-loved by many!

3. Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water (£20)

This is a bit different. It’s an elecotrolyte-enriched water mist which multi-tasks as a spritz-on make-up primer, fixer or refresher, at any of time of day.

It reminds me of those Evian facial spray cans – it feels immediately refreshing, but you can feel it’s doing more in creating a base for your make-up after moisturising. Clever stuff. It almost feels tightening (which I find is is no bad thing!), and what I love about it is the way it makes my fluid base go on so much more quickly and easily. I find it much easier to take my base down from my jawline to my neck and blend it seamlessly, as you’re meant to (and is necessary if, like me, you’re fond of using a base that’s just a teeny bit darker than your natural skin tone. I’m naughty like that).

Of the three, the Emma Hardie is the one I know I’ll come back to time and time over (and I’d seek out again) – but I’ve yet to commandeer the Nars (!) and I’m going to try the Smashbox for setting make-up, too. It could be a must for the party season ahead!
